With three weeks until yearlings arrive at Newmarket, stakes wins on both sides of the Tasman Sea today highlighted the outstanding opportunities available for all buyers at the upcoming Inglis Easter Yearling Sale, to be held on 5, 6 and 7 April.
Talented two-year-old filly Selenia lead the charge at Flemington returning more than double her purchase price from her first win, while $200,000 purchase and Champion New Zealand Sprinter Sacred Star took his earnings past NZ$750,000, and Heavens Above dominated in a Group 3 at Randwick, taking earnings well past her Inglis Easter reserve.
Selenia (Not A Single Doubt x Lunar Lady) revealed her class today when she flew up the Flemington straight to win the Listed VRC Festival of Racing Stakes over 1000m. Having run fourth in both her previous starts, the Group 3 Blue Diamond Preview and Group 2 Blue Diamond Prelude, the two-year-old was expertly selected by international bloodstock agent Johnny McKeever at last year’s Inglis Easter Yearling Sale for her trainer Robbie Griffiths from the draft of Middlebrook Valley Lodge. For an outlay of just $30,000, Selenia has now earned in excess of $80,000 for Griffiths and her large group of owners, and has cemented herself as one of the most exciting two-year-old fillies leading into the autumn.
Dual-Group 1 winner Sacred Star (Flying Spur x Irish Nova) resumed beautifully today, taking out the Group 3 ARC Darley Plate at Ellerslie over 1200m. The Tony Pike trained galloper was a $200,000 purchase by Guy Mulcaster for Raffles Racing from the Attunga Stud draft at the 2011 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale and has earned more than three times that in a wonderful career.
The win provided a timely update to his half-brother by Stratum (Lot 353) that will be offered from Rosemont Stud at the 2016 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale next month. Rosemont will also offer a half-brother by Savabeel (Lot 445) to today’s Group 3 ARC Mr Tiz Trophy winner No More Tears.
Heavens Above (Street Cry x Reggie) continued to add to her consistent record for breeder and owner Reg Kemister, taking out the Group 3 ATC Aspiration Handicap at Royal Randwick. After failing to meet her $180,000 reserve when offered from the Broadwater Thoroughbreds (now Bhima) draft at the 2013 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale, Heavens Above has won three and placed in seven of 12 starts for earnings of more than $270,000 for Kemister’s President Bloodstock and trainer Tim Martin. The win also adds significant value to her future career as a broodmare having now earned lucrative black type.

Other Inglis stakes winners today were Malaguerra at Flemington, and Savoureux and Redzel at Royal Randwick.
$32,000 Inglis VOBIS Gold graduate Malaguerra (Magnus x Tennessee Morn) took out the Listed VRC Bob Hoysted Handicap also at Flemington, over 1000m. The Lee and Anthony Freedman-trained gelding was secured from the Ballarto Lodge draft and races for Bruno Micalizzi, for whom he has earned just shy of $340,000.
Inglis Classic graduate Savoureux (Nadeem x Ripe Plum) rounded off a brilliant day of racing at Randwick, saluting in the Group 3 ATC Wenona Girl Handicap for Kris Lees. Savoureux was a $65,000 purchase for Prime Thoroughbreds from the Edinglassie Stud draft at the 2013 sale, and has won six and placed in three starts for a combined $340,000.
Redzel (Snitzel x Millrich) swooped in to claim the Listed ATC Fireball Stakes over 1000m for Triple Crown Syndications and Snowden Racing. The gelding was a $45,000 Inglis Weanling purchase and has earned over $160,000 from eight starts.
