On a spectacular day in both South Australia and Queensland, Inglis graduates Malaguerra and Howard Be Thy Name stepped up to Group 1 status, claiming the feature races in each state.
$32,000 buy Malaguerra thrilled connections by living up to his tough reputation and taking out the $500,000 Group 1 BRC BTC Cup at Doomben over 1200m for training partnership Lee and Anthony Freedman.
Malaguerra (Magnus x Tenessee Morn) held off hot competition from Dothraki to the line, a brilliant performance credited by jockey Glenn Colless, who said "I was happy when I got to the fence but I thought I might have hit the lead too early in the straight, but he just kept giving when challenged."
Stable Representative for Freedman Racing Steve Adams said decisions were yet to be made about the gelding’s program.
"It’s two weeks to the Doomben 10,000 and then two weeks to the Stradbroke. It does fall nicely, but Malaguerra is a very good fresh horse so that might be the way to go," Adams said.
Bred by Sandown Lodge Stud, Malaguerra was selected from the Ballarto Lodge draft at the 2013 Inglis VOBIS Gold Yearling Sale by Leonard Russo for owner Bruno Micalizzi. From a modest investment the gelding has delivered more than $750,000 from ten wins out of 18 career starts.
The win sees Malaguerra join fellow Inglis graduates Black Caviar and Hot Snitzel as winners of the first major feature in the Brisbane Winter Carnival program.
In a momentous victory, Howard Be Thy Name saluted in the $500,000 Group 1 SAJC South Australian Derby over 2500m, becoming the 30th Group 1 winner for sire Redoute’s Choice, and the first Group 1 winning ride by jockey John Allen.
After an imperfect first half, Howard Be Thy Name (Redoute’s Choice x Bellini Rose) strode to the lead as he hit the straight, and maintained a strong tempo to claim his fourth straight victory, and the seventh win of the day for trainer Darren Weir across Australia.
The trainer intends on extending his winning run, with plans for the colt to contest the Group 1 BRC Queensland Derby next month, with Allen keen to retain the ride.
“I hope I can go to Queensland, but I was just grateful to get the ride today and happy to get the job done for Darren,” Allen said.
“It was a messy race early but he was always travelling well. It’s a big thrill,” said Allen.
Despite failing to meet his $250,000 reserve when offered by Arrowfield Stud at the 2014 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale, Howard Be Thy Name, bred by Watson Bloodstock, has never been out of the placings from 11 starts, and has earned his connections in excess of $520,000.
Howard Be Thy Name’s victory follows the exceptional feat of fellow 2014 Inglis Easter Arrowfield Stud graduate Abbey Marie’s victory in the Group 1 SAJC Oaks on the same track a week ago.
Other stakes wins by Inglis graduates today were juveniles Morvada at Morphettville and Manaya at Scone.
Two-year-old Morvada (Mossman x Carnegie Minstrel) took out the Listed SAJC Oaklands Plate over 1600m at Morphettville for local trainer Peter Jolly. The gelding was purchased at the 2015 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale from the Vinery Stud draft by his trainer, and posted his first win today after running third behind Flying Jess in the Group 3 SAJC Sires’ Produce Stakes a fortnight ago.
After winning both of her trials, Manaya (Hinchinbrook x Hot ‘n’ Breezy) was a convincing debut winner in the Listed Scone RC Woodlands Stakes over 1100m. The filly, which is a three-quarter-sister to Hot Danish, was a $65,000 purchase for young trainer Michael Costa at last year’s Inglis Easter Yearling Sale.
Yearlings by Mossman and Hinchinbrook feature in the HTBA Scone Yearling Sale, to be held at White Park from 10.30am tomorrow, Sunday 15 May. CLICK HERE to view the catalogue online or download it on the Inglis Sales iPad App.
