Pariah destined for the top

Stunning Easter colt Pariah announced himself as a thoroughbred heavyweight with a dominant debut victory in today’s Group 3 Canonbury Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill.

The royally-bred juvenile (Redoute’s Choice x Secluded) set a new race record with his strong victory, prompting trainer Peter Snowden to declare he was off to the Group 1 Blue Diamond, for which he is now a $9 equal TAB favourite.

Given his obvious ability and his bloodlines – he is a three-quarter brother to former Group 1 star Melito – plus the fact he is now a black-type winning Redoute’s Choice colt, Pariah’s long-term future looks rosy.

“He’s a great-natured colt who has really matured into a beautiful horse and absolutely, things look good for him moving forward,’’ buyer and part-owner James Harron said.

“When we saw him at Easter last year he had a lot of quality about him, was very masculine and he had a lovely shape, a really nice medium-sized horse, not too big and definitely not too small.

“Add to that his terrific pedigree and we were confident we were on a winner and, well, it’s off to a nice start.’’

Pariah was a $700,000 buy for Harron Bloodstock at the 2016 Australian Easter Yearling Sale from the Arrowfield Stud draft.

He is the first foal to race of Secluded, who was a dual metropolitan-winning mare for trainer Paul Messara.

Arrowfield will offer Pariah’s full brother at this year’s Easter Yearling Sale – Lot 333 – at Newmarket from April 4-6.

He is one of 51 horses on offer from the leading vendor and one of 36 progeny of Redoute’s Choice – the second-highest stallion by representation behind Snitzel (44).

Meanwhile fellow Easter graduate Tivaci showed he was in for a big autumn carnival with a strong first-up win in today’s Listed Kensington Stakes at Flemington.

The multiple Group 1-placed 4YO hadn’t raced since an unlucky end to his Spring carnival in the Mackinnon Stakes in November.

The beautifully-bred stallion (High Chaparral x Breccia) was a $250,000 buy for Paul Moroney Bloodstock from the Princes Farm draft at the 2014 Australian Easter Yearling Sale.

He has now won almost double that amount and will be set for the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) at Flemington in March, where a win would secure a huge career at stud for him.

And last night Malaguerra secured another black-type victory when comfortably winning the Group 2 Australia Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley.

In just his fourth start for trainer Peter Gelagotis, Malaguerra stalked the speed set by Sirbible and Chetwood before flexing his muscle at the top of the straight.

The win took the five-year-old’s career record to 12 wins from 23 starts and over $1.5million in prizemoney.

Malaguerra (Magnus x Tennessee Morn) was a $32,000 buy for Bruno Micalizzi at the Inglis Vobis Gold Sale from the Ballarto Lodge draft.

Inglis has 16 Magnus progeny available at out upcoming major yearling sales – 14 at Melbourne Premier (February 26 – March 1) and two at Sydney Classic (February 11-13).
